Don't get me wrong, I love my wedding rings but they misrepresented the "white gold" description. I received my (3 carats) worth of wedding bands and they were yellow gold with RHODIUM plate.
Rhodium is an alloy similar to silver but not even THAT. Every once in a while I have to pay another $100 to have them replated because the yellow starts showing through.
OMG, please do your research. White gold is almost always plated with rhodium to give them a shiny white color since it is essentially yellow gold.
For this reason, white gold always has to be re-plated every 2-3 years, depending on usage of the jewelry. I took an excerpt from www.jewelers.org below: "Why Does White Gold Yellow? Itโs natural for white gold to fade, sometimes yellowing, hereโs why. Most white gold rings are flash plated with a very, very thin coating of rhodium (a pure white metal) to give them a more brilliant, pure white appearance.
This rhodium plating will wear off over time and reveal the white gold ring underneath. Because pure gold is very yellow, no matter how much you alloy it with other white metals like zinc and nickel, it will almost always retain some of its yellowish body color. How to Return White Gold to White With minimal maintenance, your jeweler can return white gold jewelry to its original white shine. Most bench jewelers at professional jewelry stores, like members of Jewelers of America, can easily re-plate a white gold ring with rhodium for very little cost.
Also, many manufacturers will re-plate the rings they sell. If you want a truly white metal that wonโt require any future re-plating, buy jewelry in platinum or palladium that is naturally pure white in color." The above (in quotations) was found on the jewelers.org website. I hope you now understand why you must get your rings re-plated every so often.
Stick to platinum, if you can afford it. No re-plating necessary.
